A Skillful Sailor

What makes him one? Is it the knowledge he learned while at the academe? Or the training certificate of competency that he needs to secure before being accepted for a job on board? Or from the shipboard experience, gained while at sea?
I think it is a combination of myriad of factors, as the job demands not only a sound mind, a good physical well-being and a strength in character.
However, sailing on smooth seas does not enhance the skills of a sailor. It is while sailing on stormy weather and rough seas that define the depth of his character and his skills.
Every experience is unique and every ship not only added up to the sailing experience lists, but made him a better one from the last.
